A lot of men and women are obsessed with the idea of losing weight. This is because, for them, it is a way to improve their image in the society. Hence, a lot of us are willing to do almost anything if it would help us achieve this goal. However, with our obsession with losing weight, we sometimes forget to be cautious in doing things that may endanger our health.

There have been a lot of speculations around social groups and online that taking the drug Adderall can help someone lose weight. Hence, we shall dig deep regarding this topic to answer whether Adderall can help us lose weight and if we should use it for such.

What is Adderall?

Adderall is a stimulant drug from the salts of the drug amphetamine.  The company Richwood Pharmaceuticals created it in 1996 as a medication for the treatment of the mental disorder known as ADHD. However, as time passed by, many uses of the drug have been uncovered.

The Food and Drug Administration approved some of these uses (i.e. narcolepsy). However, some people still took the drug for purposes that the drug was not made for. These off-label uses included performance enhancement (cognitive and physical), recreational use, and weight loss.

Weight Loss With Adderall?

Taking Adderall can cause some serious side effects. Some of these side effects can be dangerous to your health if one does not stop misusing the drug. However, it can also cause some side effects that for some people can be beneficial, and this includes weight loss.

Weight loss can occur in some patients due to misusing the drug or due to physical aversion towards the drug. It can be the result of other side effects such as gastrointestinal disturbances, constipation, diarrhea, dryness of the mouth, or change of taste also known as dysgeusia.

The Food and Drug Administration has not approved weight loss as one of the uses of Adderall. However, some doctors may prescribe the drug to aid weight loss. Nevertheless, you should not take this drug for any use without the supervision and prescription from a physician, most importantly for weight loss. (1)

Possible Side Effects of Misusing Adderall

Misusing Adderall can cause many common and severe side effects. Using it to lose weight without a prescription from a doctor can cause side effects such as hypertension, hypotension, erectile dysfunction, abdominal pain, nausea, blurred vision and more.

Ironically, a 2014 study on the drug found out that, although, children who take the drug may lose weight, children who take the drug for longer periods of time actually gain more weight than those who do not take the drug. (2)

Furthermore, Adderall is a Schedule II drug due to its high potential for abuse. Using it for weight loss for extended periods of time may result in tolerance and addiction. Hence, you must be extremely careful when using the drug.

Losing weight seems like a difficult task; hence, many look for a drug that they could take and instantly help them lose weight. However, the best way to lose weight is still to eat healthily and engage in some physical exercise. Consult your doctor before taking Adderall for any purpose.
